How to Manage Gout Pain During the Holiday Season

The holidays are some of the most enjoyable time of the year. We reconnect with distant relatives and make new friends. We enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere a t the office and at home we usually find time to slow-down and reflect upon all of the events of the previous year.

We also get an opportunity to attend numerous holiday parties. Many of these events have great tasting food and drink. However, with all of these temptations we need to remember that a change in diet can cause a painful gout attack. So it makes sense to understand what types of food should be avoided to help manage gout during the holidays.

Managing gout is a year-round concern for the millions who have experience the painful deposits of needle-like crystals of uric acid that build up in joint space and connective tissue. These deposits can lead to swelling, heat, redness and arthritis. The proverbial swollen toe often characterizes a gout attack.

What causes gout and how can it be managed and prevented?
Gout is typically brought on by the inability of the body to eliminate excess uric acid. Uric acid is a result of the breakdown of purines. Purines are naturally found in the body and in many types of food. So with the temptation of party trays overflowing with food of every type, read on to learn how to manage gout pain during the holidays.
It is typically suggested that people with gout reduce their intake of high-purine foods. Here is a brief list of high-purine foods, foods in moderation and low-purine foods for your review. Although this is not an all-inclusive list, it can provide some insight into healthy eating during the holiday season:

High-purine foods: (foods that should be avoided for low-purine diets)

Alcohol, including beer
Seafood, including anchovies, herring, trout, mussels, scallops and ocean perch
Coffee, tea, cola drinks
Lamb, sausage, game meat

Foods in moderation: (foods that should consumed in moderation for low-purine diets)

Mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage, dried beans, artichokes, peas
Peanuts, soy and soy products (tofu and soy sauce)
Brown rice, whole wheat, malt, whole grain cereal

Low-purine foods (foods lowest in purines for low-purine diets)

Tart cherries, fruits, berries
Carrots, celery, eggplant, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, potatoes
Non-caffeine sodas
Cottage cheese, yogurt, dairy (fat free or low fat)

In addition to eating in moderation and maintaining a healthy and balanced diet during the holidays, many are searching for natural ways to manage gout year-round. Several low purine cookbooks are available with dozens of great tasting low-purine recipes.

Highly concentrated food products are another excellent way to manage gout pain all year long. For example, tart cherries supplements and cherry juice concentrate are an ideal way to manage gout attacks.

Research on tart cherries indicate the natural antioxidants contained in this tiny red fruit can help dissolve the painful crystals that form in the joints. One outstanding product that delivers a highly concentrated dose of tart cherries is Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry supplements.

If you are interested in managing gout pain year-round with natural solutions consider a drinking plenty of water, eating a healthy and well-balanced diet, drinking cherry juice concentrate and using Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry capsules.

Joint Pain Caused By Gout

Sometimes we may notice why the older age group is a bit hesitant to eat nuts, beans, peas and the like. Presumably it is because those foods are rich in purine or those that may raise the level of uric acid of the body. More often than not, the elderly are prone to a kind of arthritis called “gout”, in which it is caused by the high level of uric acid formed in the joint cavity of the bones. This will result to the deforming disease and in effect the patient can suffer acute joint painand inflammation.

While uric acid can be naturally found in the body as it is the one responsible to carry waste materials out, it should also exit our system at the same time with the urine through the kidneys. However sometimes, the uric acid accumulates in the blood stream while it transports, then it builds up around the joints and causes gout. Although gout typically shares the same arthritis symptoms like in many other forms, such as severe attacks of pain, warmth, redness and engorgement, it can also be magnified as kidney stones or worse, kidney failure. Patients with gout in its early stages are affected by only one joint and that is the big toe. However, as time passes and proper diagnosis is not met, it can also suffer other joints of the body and later on may lose its function.

Based on statistics, gout usually affects men over the age of 30 and women over the age of 50. The peak age of gout attack is 75 years old but it can also occur to the younger population on some occasions. It affects around 1-2% of the Western population and is becoming more common. Around one million Americans are noted to have gout attack each year. It is the high level of uric acid in the body that causes gout attacks to each person. It is therefore necessary to give attention to different forms of arthritis treatment to combat this disease. Basically, it should focus in lowering the level of uric acid of a gout patient.

There are certain foods that can raise uric acid level of the body. Such are those purine-rich foods that need to be avoided like yeast, sardines, sweetbreads, bacon, liver, salmon, turkey, goose, peas, beans and mushrooms. Moreover, obesity can also increase the level of uric acid and therefore it is highly advisable to take safety in one’s eating habits. Individuals suffering with joint pain caused by gout should consume adequate vitamin C, limit alcohol and fructose consumption, eat sufficient amount of fiber-rich foods, low in protein and low in fat.

Question by Johnny D: Joint pain – Gout? Psuedo-Gout? Something else?
I am 30 years old, and every once in a while I have some sort of joint pain “flare up” – almost always in my ankle, the top of my foot (not my big toe) or my knee.

It USUALLY lasts 3 days. It’s mildly annoying the first day, super painful the next day (so I can just barely walk) and then stiff and a little pain the third day. By the fourth day it usually just feels a little stiff with no pain.

Is this likely something like Gout or some other form of arthritis? I dont have other symptoms (that I am aware of, anyway…)

Best answer:

Answer by Old Guy
It sounds like Gout to me. As you’re so young, probably a change of diet will fix your problem. (Watch the seafood intake, especially shellfish) Also if you’re into body building, watch what you use to bulk up. Go to webmd.com and search gout for details.

What do you think? Answer below!

I’ll make this as short as possible. I was diagnosed with Depression many years ago. Instead of doctors testing my hormones, blood sugar or anything at all, they told me that my depression was genetic and that I didn’t produce something (they didn’t tell me what at the time) and that I’d have to take medicine for the rest of my life. I was after all “like a diabetic who needs insulin”.

That is when the real problems began.

I recall feeling paranoid and crying even more after taking antidepressants than I did before taking them. What did that prove? Hummm that I needed them of course.

Years later after being on antidepressants for so long I reeked of chemicals, and had gained 35 or 40 pounds. Now that I could not sleep anymore nor relax, or feel anything and had my left retina blow out and had holes in my right retina due to the amount of chemicals I had ingested over a decade and a half, I finally found out the answer to WHY I was depressed in the 1st place.

It took watching a health program on Family Net. A show called “Your Health”. At the time the host was Doug Kaufmann.

Doug K. spoke about how long term use of antibiotics can cause IBS, Allergies, and Depression. He gave these illnesses in just that order, and that is exactly my history. Exactly in that order. You see, I had taken antibiotics for acne during my teens and twenties. Lots of them! At 21 or so I was diagnosed with IBS, at 24 or so Allergies, and then at 28 I was diagnosed with Depression.

I’m not sure, but I do believe that I had a combo of things happening to me. I had always had difficult menses and expect that Ive always had hormonal issues, then add the antibiotics which cause yeast overgrowth, and pour toxic chemicals into the blood steam that can affect the brain along with the nutritional deficiency they cause because of the altered bowel flora and I was a mess. Add antidepressant drugs to the mix which cause more hormonal disruptions, and deplete or interfere with the ability to absorb the nutrients from the foods I ate and well you get the picture.

So my advice to anyone suffering from depression is to go to a naturopath who will get to the root cause of your health issues and not just cover them up with drugs.

Coming off antidepressant drugs was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my life. And all the while doing it, the doctors were telling me that I needed them and had to take them for the rest of my life. But my life was just about over. It was get off of them or die! So I did it without the help of a doctor. Slowly cutting the pills down over a 6 month period and even that was probably to fast.

I’ve been off antidepressants for 6 years now.

At the 2 year mark I thought I’d surely not make it due to the sleeplessness, pain, electric shocks, jitters and other issues I had from taking antidepressants long term.

That is when I found Vibe by Eniva. I credit it with saving my life. It gave me back the nutrients that had been depleted from my body and it allowed me to carry on and to heal. In addition, had I known to address the hormonal issues at the 2 year mark I believe I could have saved myself a lot of healing time.

If you would like to discuss antidepressants, depression, my story or anything related, just give me (Darlene) a call at 502-363-0101. I’d be happy to talk with you.

FYI: Vibe by Eniva has DNA protective properties.
Researchers conclude that a region of DNA contains variants associated with an increased risk of gout. They say that further investigation of the gene will help to clarify “the complex relationships between” genes and how gout manifests physically in humans.
Uric acid, which is found naturally in the blood stream, is formed as the body breaks down waste products, mainly those containing purine, a substance that is produced by the body and is also found in high concentrations in some foods. Normally, the kidneys filter uric acid out of the blood and excrete , it in the urine. Sometimes, however, the body produces too much uric acid or the kidneys aren’t efficient enough at filtering it from the blood, and it builds up in the blood stream, a condition known as hyperuricemia. High levels of uric acid circulating in the blood can cause urate crystals to settle in the tissues of the joints. Gout is a form of acute arthritis that causes severe pain and swelling in the joints. It most commonly affects the big toe. Gout usually comes on suddenly, goes away after 5-10 days, and can keep recurring.
