Adhd Handout

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the serious psychiatric conditions found in children in the preschool and early school years. It is characterized by inappropriate level of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that is present before the age of seven. A child with ADHD faces lots of difficulties at home and school. It is hard for the young person to control his/her behavior and impulsivity and pay attention. The helpless child might express his/her problems to parents like why am I different?, why am I called a troublemaker and headcase?, why dont I understand lots of things at school which are not difficult to other children? and so on. When to suspect ADHD? All children, to a certain degree, will demonstrate restlessness, impulsivity (acting without thinking), or day dreaming. These may not be typical ADHD. However, it is worth suspecting ADHD/ADD if such behaviors begin to affect academic performance or social relationships, or in the circumstance that the childs behavior becomes disruptive, challenging or beyond control. The signs of ADHD could be listed in two different categories. The most common hyperactive-impulsive signs include:

= Feeling restless, often fidgeting with hands or feet, or squirming while seated
= Running, climbing, or leaving a seat in situations where sitting or quiet behavior is expected
= Blurting out answers before hearing the whole question
= Having difficulty waiting in queue or taking turns.

The inattention signs are the following:

= Often becoming easily distracted by irrelevant sights and sounds
= Often failing to pay attention to details and making careless mistakes
= Rarely following instructions carefully and completely losing or forgetting things like toys, or pencils, books, and tools needed for a task
= Often skipping from one uncompleted activity to another.

Many parents coming to clinic ask if it is their mistake that causing ADHD to their child. There are also concerns regarding the intelligence of the child leading to poor performance at school. ADHD is, in fact, neither caused by lower IQ nor by poor parenting. Rather, it is a neuro-psychiatric disorder with a genetic risk, and is influenced by environmental factors. Some other possible reasons might be alcohol or nicotine abuse by mother while pregnant, low birth weight, and brain infections, though there are no conclusive evidences to substantiate this. Guidance and support from counselors, parents, and teachers would help the young person with ADHD/ADD to achieve his/her full potential in the areas of attention and behavior. If right intervention is not made at right time the individual will be left with high risk of increased difficulty in achieving success in life and might develop the following problems in life:

* Emotional Problems: low self esteem, depression, which might lead to suicide.
* Behavioral Problems: risk taking behavior, oppositional defiant and conduct disorder, substance misuse, anti-social and criminal behavior.
* Physical health problems: arising from alcohol and drug abuse, accidents due to inability to see danger and impulsivity, psychosomatic disorders, cardiovascular diseases and so on.
* Educational Problems: poor academic performance due to lack of attention, suspension from school due to behavioral problems, leaving school early, etc.
* Relationship Problems: Fights with parents, siblings, and partners, difficulties with peers, poor social skills, domestic violence, divorce/separation, etc.
* Employment Problems: loss of job due to misbehavior or impulsive behavior, inadequate performance, etc.

The problems would be endless in any settings including home or social environment if an early intervention is not made. The individual might cause cost burden to other individuals and society in the form of accidents, insurance claims, etc. which might lead to social exclusion, causing further psychological damage to the individual. It is important to know who the right professional to be contacted if you suspect ADHD with your young person. The following table might give you an idea about the health professionals who are trained in this area:

Specialty Can Diagnose Can Prescribe Provide Counseling
Psychiatrists yes yes yes
Psychologists yes No yes
Pediatricians/GP yes yes no
Neurologists yes yes no
Clinical Social
Workers yes no yes

ASSESSMENT
==========

As the symptoms vary so much across settings, assessment of ADHD is not straight forward, especially when inattentiveness is the primary concern. Hence, even if a parent or teacher notices only one of the three characteristics of ADHD namely, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, it is highly recommended to make appropriate referrals to the healthcare professionals without delay. It is not necessary to have all the three characteristics to be present for an ADHD/ADD diagnosis. Different assessment methods are employed by health professionals to diagnose ADHD/ADD. A clinician would look at the following aspects to make sure that none of these are raising the ADHD/ADD concerns:

= A sudden change in the childs lifethe death of a parent or grandparent; parents divorce; a parents job loss
= Undetected seizures
= A middle ear infection that causes intermittent hearing problems
= Medical disorders that may affect brain functioning
= Underachievement caused by learning disability like dyslexia
= Anxiety or depression.

The clinician might ask you to fill in a few forms like Conners, Child Behavior Check List, and also would seek reports from the school. Careful and comprehensive assessment of an individuals history, behavior and symptoms would help a healthcare professional to make a proper ADHD diagnosis. Hence it is very important to give clear and accurate information as much as possible to avoid misdiagnosis. The clinician might link in with your GP and/or school teachers in order to get clear and up to date information of the case.

TREATMENT
=========

Effective treatment for ADHD/ADD includes the following:

= Medication
= Behavioral therapy and
= Psycho-education

No single treatment method is the answer for every child. In most cases a combination approach that involves medication, behavioral therapy and psycho-education show good result. When a child is prescribed with medication the parent needs to be fully informed of the side effects of that particular medication. Each child’s needs and personal history must be carefully considered while planning a treatment package. In any case, it should be the parent who makes the final decision regarding medication for the child under his/her care.

There are a good number of websites like www.proventherapy.com that offer online support and counseling with regard to disorders like ADHD.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment Options

Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition where involves inflammation of joints which leads to further swelling and pain. It causes an upset inside the body where the immune system starts attacking joint tissue, cartilage and other organs. However the causes of rheumatoid arthritis are still not known f ully. This type of arthritis is the most common and affects one in every 100 people. Rheumatoid arthritis affects people of all ages but mainly effects people within the ages of 30 to 50. Women are three times more likely to be effected as men. Patients carrying this form of arthritis most often complain of fluctuating pain and inflammation of joints, which can get gets worse during flare-ups. This article aims to offer an insight into several treatments that can be used against rheumatoid arthritis.

There are two main kinds of drugs used against rheumatoid arthritis; first line drugs, fast acting drugs, and second line which are slow acting drugs.

First line drugs include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Examples of NSAIDs are aspirin, ibuprofen and etodolac. These can be used to reduce pain and swelling of joints. Aspirin has long been used to decrease inflammation. It can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis by using doses that are higher then those used during fever. Newer types of NSAIDs are effective as aspirin and require fewer intakes per day. However just like all medication, it has its own side effects which include stomach pain, abdominal pain and a few others. In order to minimize the side effects of NSAIDs, they are regularly taken with meals. Another type of first line drugs includes Corticosteroids.
They are more powerful then NSAIDs and are given either orally or through an injection to the inflamed areas such as joints. Corticosteroids are given in small doses, mainly during flare-ups as it reacts more strongly to inflammation. However it can have serious side effects on the body if given for an extended period of time in high doses. These include weight gain, easy risk of infection, easy bruising and others. The side effects can be minimized by decreasing the level of doses given to the patients slowly as the condition of the patient improves. A sharp decline in the doses given to the patient is discouraged as it can lead to flare-ups and other symptoms of the disease.

Second line drugs include Disease-modifying Anti-rheumatic Drugs or DMARDs. These drugs are mainly used to prevent destruction of joints and deformity. DMARDs are used for an extended period of time in order to be effective. DMARDs can often be used with a combination of other second line drugs as therapy. Some examples of DMARDs include Sulfasalazine, Hydroxychloroquine, D-penicillamine and others.

Apart from the above methods, there are some other approaches that can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The patients can undertake exercise that can help them improve their physical condition and improve joint mobility. Additionally it is important to have a healthy intake of food. Many often patients with rheumatoid arthritis can experience weight loss. This can be combined with medication and therapy to come up with a more potent combination against the condition. Depending on your position, you can under go either physiotherapy or occupational therapy. This will help improve flexibility, mobility, and reduce pain in your joints.

The aforementioned approaches to rheumatoid arthritis have been used time and again. However it is essential to seek your nearest doctor to get firm guidance. Each arthritis case shall be dealt on an individual basis. With the passage of time, new and more effective treatments against arthritis are starting to come through. However the only way to gain the maximum benefit from the existing treatments will be to remain punctual throughout the course of the medication. It is important to constantly consult your doctor and keep him or her up to date with your condition, so that the doctor can advise you further and give more effective feedback.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diet as an Alternative Treatment

When you are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis you start of with medicine and treatments your doctor prescribes for you, some of these remedies will work for you while others have so many side effects that it is worse then the illness itself. usually it takes people one ore two years in the regular health care before they start looking for other remedies. A rheumatoid arthritis diet is one of these alternative remedies we want to inform you about.

Of course the symptoms vary, rheumatoid arthritis is a disease where people react totally different to the disease itself but also to the medicine. Some people have severe pains every day and others have mild pain but do have very inflamed joints. Also the way they react to medication can be completely different. Some really have very good results with the prescription drug their doctor gave them while others have severe side effects. All of this is because rheumatoid arthritis is an illness of the immune system and people have a tendency to react different to it.

Is rheumatoid arthritis diet an alternative to regular treatment?

People usually only start looking at alternatives when the regular treatment is not working or the side effects are to severe. A rheumatoid arthritis diet is such an alternative. There has always been much discussion about rheumatoid arthritis diets although you should not see it as a diet in the traditional sense. In fact it is just a list of foods that you should avoid and a list that most people have good results with. But just as with the regular treatments, rheumatoid arthritis diet is something you should experiment with a little. Regular doctors usually do not recommend a rheumatoid arthritis diet because they say it is never proved to be effective and everybody reacts different on it, they are right people do react different on it but they also react different on the regular prescription drugs. So that is a lousy argument especially when you know how many people are suffering from this disease.

It is a diet that you should discus with your doctor because the diet increases the intake of omega-3 fatty acids and as the name already said this can be an increasing of the total amount of fat. We say it can be, because if you look at the other recommendations fresh vegetables and fruits and the things you should avoid the total amount of fat can be much less than your regular diet depending on what you are eating right now. Fatty acids, omega-3, can be found in soybean oil, fish oil, walnuts, avocado oil, walnuts and canola oil.

This might seem like a large amount of fats but these fats are in the food you eat, fish oil can be eaten in many fatty fish like salmon and many other fish. And because you avoid fats from fried and processed foods you will probably eat less fat in total. you should also avoid alcohol and coffee

A healthy weight is also important

There is one aspect on a rheumatoid arthritis diet that your doctor would agree with, you have to become and stay on a healthy weight. So its is not the list of foods where there is an agreement about but the fact that with a good healthy weight your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms will be much less and that is a good thing to remember in a world with people who are getting more and more obese.

You should learn the amazing power of the homeopathic remedy. As time goes by, more individuals than ever are learning the dangers of drugs prescribed by their doctors. For instance, they are poisonous to the point of killing more than one hundred thousand Americans annually. Homeopathic remedies are an alternative.

Many drugs are addictive. They all come with side effects. When the side effects are bad, doctors give patients more drugs to deal with those effects. Of course the new drugs also have side effects, which doctors may prescribe even more drugs for. In some cases this vicious cycle leads to emergency surgery.

Perhaps the most alarming part of this is the fact that pharmaceutical drugs are usually not even made for the purpose of dealing with the cause of any illness. They are made under the auspices of the law of opposites, to suppress physical symptoms. If you are in pain, doctors usually do not concern themselves with the cause of your pain. They are more than happy to give you painkillers that do nothing other than dull the painful sensations.

Homeopathy works in the exact opposite way, using the law of similars. Unlike drugs, homeopathy uses all natural substances. If the substance has proven to cause certain symptoms in people who are healthy, that indicates that it can help the body to heal, when a sick person experiences those symptoms.

The thing that is really fascinating is the original substance in the remedy is extremely diluted. It’s also shaken by machines every time it is diluted. In many instances, there are so many dilutions, that there is actually none of the actual substance left in the final product.

For this reason, many medical doctors and scientists scoff at the idea that a homeopathic remedy can be effective. The proof is in the results, which are irrefutable. The skeptics like to say that the results can be attributed to the placebo effect, but if that is true, then why wouldn’t the same be true for people who say they were helped with the prescriptions their doctors gave them?

You can debate it until you are blue in the face, or you can find out for yourself if a homeopathic remedy works for you just by trying one the next time you have symptoms you would like to get over. For virtually every symptom, you can find remedies. You will enjoy the very affordable prices, as well as the lack of any kind of side effects.

The leg and the ankle are two areas that are injured more often. This is especially true among athletes who are into heavy sports. Normally, minor injuries are caused by calf muscle strain, ankle sprain, shin splints, or tendonitis. The burning sensation brought by the pain is quite annoying and can limit a person’s performance for a certain period of time. For faster recovery, it is important that you learn how to apply first aid or simple home remedy techniques.

The most effective way to remedy pain in the leg or ankle is to give it total and complete rest. It means you avoid putting weight on the injured part so that the healing process may hasten. While resting the injured area, apply cold compression to it to reduce swelling and alleviate pain. Cold ice helps in constricting the nerves, reducing the flow of blood into the affected area. When the inflammation has ceased, apply hot compress next. This will encourage blood circulation, easing the muscles and the nerves for faster healing.

You will also need anti-inflammatory medicines at hand while you are applying ice treatment to the injured region. Even though ice treatment may have anti-inflammatory effects, it is not enough to cure the injury or alleviate the pain for so long. Naproxen, aspirin, and ibuprofen are three of the most common non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs you can take without suffering from side effects. They work by combating cyclooxygenase or COX in causing inflammation in the injured area.

Before attempting to return to your normal activities, make sure your injury is completely healed. Perform stretching exercises from time to time to regain the strength in your calf muscle and ankle tendons. Walking is the best exercise that will help you stretch your leg muscles and prepare them for heavier activities later on. Doing it for at least 15 minutes a day will help warm your muscles up and tell you whether you are ready to work, run, or play again.

The recovery period for ankle and leg injuries may vary depending on how serious the condition is and how the patient is adjusting to the treatment. It is usually faster for individuals who have minor injuries, nevertheless, their cooperation during the healing process is also considered.

A minor injury may allow the patient to work again after three to four days of rest. In a situation where the pain fails to subside within this period, the help of a doctor is strongly advised. A more serious condition may be the underlying cause and only a professional may be able to diagnose and treat it properly.

Diets for Gout – Know What to Avoid and Have a Safe Treatment

One positive method toward reducing the negative effects of gout is to implement one of the few beneficial diets for gout. Gout is the result of excessive accumulation of metabolic byproducts of uric acid encompassing and infiltrating the joints. A crystal-like substance called monosodium urate is the primary reason for the pain afflicting the joints, which are made up of uric acid salt.

This monosodium urate accumulates in and around the joints, and it’s this accumulation that causes these sharp, searing pains. When this accumulation takes place, the immune system reacts by attacking this inflammation with neutrophils in order to remove the cause of injury. This product of the immune system, after time, accumulates as well, which causes more pain and swelling. When all is said and done, this war destroys the joint, altogether.

Purines are the result of the breaking down of uric acid. Purines are one of the two components consisting of amino acids and complex proteins. These make up the ATP, RNA and DNA. The body, normally, recycles purine by utilizing an enzyme called xanthenes oxidase.

At time, people unknowingly consume unhealthy amounts of purine-rich foods which, after time, become too overwhelming for these enzymes to control. If any drink excessively, or take certain medications, this, too, can reduce the overall effects of these enzymes to where they become unable to produce the beneficial levels of purine.

The enigma to controlling gout is to learn how to control the levels of uric acid. This control comes by decreasing the levels of purines consumed in purine-rich foods. Purine-rich foods, after all, increase the levels of uric acid. Alcoholic beverages, for one, must be avoided.

Alcohol decreases the proper functions of the kidney. As the functions of the kidneys decrease, this allows for excessive amounts of uric acid to increase at an alarming rate, more than the immune system can handle in most cases. Carbohydrates and saturated fats also increase uric acid so, obviously, these should be avoided, too.

High-protein diets should also be avoided seeing that this increases the levels of amino acids which, in turn, displace uric acid in the kidneys. Hence, the amino acids get forced back into the blood stream which raises the levels of uric acid.

For safety measures, notify a doctor if any symptoms occur within the joint areas. This pain will only increase if ignored. Notifying a professional is the only way to receive proper medication, if any is necessary, and a proper diet in order to decrease and/or eliminate the afflictions associated with gout. There are, after all, quite a few diets for gout prescribed according to each individual.

This is also true for medications, as well. If weariness occurs as to actually visiting a doctor, information about the causes, effects and cures of gout can be found but, regardless of this, a visit to a professional is inevitable, to say the least. The worse that’s going to happen is that the pain will decrease and overall health will increase. There’s nothing to lose but pain and discomfort itself/

Some common symptoms of gout are pain and swelling, fever, red and shiny skin around your joint. Frequent gout attacks can also lead to kidney troubles and tophi, which are soft tissue swellings caused by uric acid crystals. Gout sufferers are also at risk for kidney disease or kidney stones.

There are certain foods that should be limited if you have chronic kidney disease. There are also some foods you want to include in your diet that may help curve symptoms and possibly avoid dialysis. If you are already on dialysis, follow the eating plan provided by your physician. Before beginning any kind of kidney disease diet always check with your health care professional.

It can be a tricky process deciding what and how to eat properly with kidney disease. There are several types of foods that need to be eliminated or limited. However, you will also need to consume enough calories to keep up a decent energy level and stay healthy. A good healthy weight needs to be maintained as well. You do not want to lose too much weight as this will put you at a risk for other diseases or health issues.

Please remember to discuss your diet plans thoroughly with your health care professional. Also it would be advantageous to sit and talk with a nutritionist or dietitian to help plan healthy options while observing the kidney disease diet.

As a general rule, those suffering with chronic kidney disease need to limit their intake of the minerals potassium and phosphorus. Sodium and as well as protein will need to be consumed at lower levels and you’ll want to monitor how much liquids you ingest.

About 5 to 7 ounces a day of high protein foods can be eaten. Protein is a tricky one as you will need enough to have energy and fight off disease; but too much can stress the kidneys. Being knowledgeable about how much protein different foods contain will help monitor it more closely.

Sodium retention can cause problems for a lot of people. If the kidneys are already in distress it will be difficult for them to keep up with too much salt in the body. They will have to work harder to get rid of excess sodium. Limiting sodium has other benefits as well, such as helping fight against fluid retention which is a common problem with kidney disease.

Another item to monitor closely when observing a kidney disease diet is fluid intake. Talk with your physician or dietician to determine what amount of liquids is needed in a day. Careful monitoring will help you keep at the recommended amounts of fluids.

Always check with your doctor before making any major changes to dieting habits or plans. Read labels closely to be familiar with included ingredients. Eating a healthy kidney disease diet can help avoid dialysis or further kidney damage.
