What is the difference between urea and uric acid?
Regarding urine formation, what is excreted? Urea or uric acid?
Urea is the waste that is produced when your body metabolizes protein. It dissolves in blood and is excreted in the urine. It is also excreted, along with sodium chloride, in sweat. Uric acid is the final breakdown product of purine metabolism and is also excreted in the urine. High levels of uric acid in the blood are associated with medical conditions such as gout, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney stones. Low levels in the blood can be associated with multiple sclerosis. Eating foods high in purine can cause an increase in the levels in the blood. These include eating a lot of sea salt, organ meats such as liver, beef, poultry, pork, fish, asparagus, cauliflower, dried peas & beans, lentils, mushrooms, spinach, oatmeal and wheat bran & wheat germ. Also sweetbreads, anchovies, sardines, mackerel and scallops and fructose.
